Swedish azz and Gilbert Holmström perform Fåglarna, written in 1966, for the first time live
March 5, 2012

Last Saturday Swedish azz concluded their Scandinavian tour. Guests were invited for two concerts: Swedish musicians who were already active in the sixties. At Nefertiti, Göteburg, they played Fåglarna together with saxofonist Gilbert Holmström, who wrote the piece for a radio recording in 1966. The graphic score is based on the Hitchcock movie 'the Birds'.

Other guests were Lars Göran Ulander, Georg Riedel, Lennart Åber and Gunnar Lindgren. See some recordings on the video page.

Fire! invites Oren Ambarchi for another tour
January 3, 2012

After a succesfull tour with Oren Ambarchi last October, Fire! will bring him over to Europe again August 27 - September 2, 2012

Fire! is a high calibre allstar combo from Sweden featuring Mats Gustafsson from The Thing (saxophone/Fender Rhodes/electronics), Johan Berthling from Tape (bass) and Andreas Werliin from Wildbirds & Peacedrums (percussion). Now with added firepower courtesy of Australian drone master Oren Ambarchi from Sunn O))) (guitar/electronics). Their sound is a frenzy of monolithic rock textures, scorched electronics, hypnotic rhythms, repetitive grooves and an all-channels-open free jazz spirit, all amped up at blistering psychedelic voltage.
An album from the quartet with Ambarchi was recorded in London October 2011 and will be out on Rune Grammofon May 2012.

"Developing a cascade of responses to the musical opportunities their creativity allows, they spin extraordinary improvisations out of the raw materials of heart, soul and spirit." - Music and More

"In sum, a music of contrasts : raw and vulnerable, sensitive and harsh, coherent and adventurous, energetic and contained, yet full of incredible passion. Highly recommended!" - Free Jazz

And the winner is....
June 1, 2011

Mats Gustafsson!!!
Today it was announced that he won the prestigious Nordic Council Music Price

The jury: "For over two decades Mats Gustafsson has been one of the big names in improvised music. With his innovative saxophone playing he is constantly bursting the limits of the musical genres that we need to assign to music we have not met before. Whether he is working in the Peter Brštzmann Chicago Tentet's avant-garde world, or in the more punk-oriented trio, The Thing, Mats is present with an uncompromising expression, a total presence, a striking energy and a high degree of sensitivity for his fellow musicians. Mats does not just renew the saxophone expression, he reinvents it and creates new worlds of music between the tones and behind the noise. Mats' concerts are just as extensive and incalculable as his huge record production which consists of more than 200 titles. We recommend that you open your hearts and let yourself be enchanted by Mats Gustafsson's musical universe".

The Thing European tour
April 7, 2011

The Thing just finished a European tour in Sweden, France, Austria, Italy and Lithuania. In Stockholm they performed with Neneh Cherry, in Vilnius with Barry Guy.

In Italy the trains were on strike, so after a long beautiful busride from Innsbruck to Verona we were welcomed by our driver, who knew very well who he was waiting for...

The Thing & Neneh Cherry
March 29, 2011

The Thing performed with Neneh Cherry at Strand, Stockholm, March 29.

They met for the first time last December, for a recording session in London. Together they picked a song, talked a little, and just went for it: no rehearsal, just one take. And it sounded great.

For more concert dates in France, Austria, Italy and Lithuania (with Barry Guy) go to the Thing concertpage
